Machiko RyuLyricist

"Machiko Ryū" is a famed lyricist, translator (lyrics, musical), author and musical writer active since the early '70s.

Early days

"Machiko Ryū" started her career by translating the lyrics of foreign pop songs into Japanese, while in college in the late '60s.

By doing so, the Japanese pop singers could sing foreign hit songs, in a way that Japanese listeners can understand, and enjoy.

And for the people wishing to be a lyricist in popular music, writing Japanese lyrics for international pop songs was a major gateway, and also the first hurdle.

Debut and Candies

After a while, she was requested to provide her original Japanese lyrics to a fresh-debuted, on the way up folk duo "Tombo-chan", for their 2nd single in 1975.

And this seems to be her debut song wrote as a professional lyricist in Japanese popular music.

3 months later, a music producer offered "Ryu" to write a song for a rapidly rising pop group,"Candies". Because, the producer anticipated that she could write a fitting lyrics for them, since "Ryu" and the members of "Candies" were women, and in the same generation.

Here is one of the song.

And quite a few of them became a big hit particularly in the '70s & '80s.

Actually, her name "Machiko Ryū" was one of the most trusted brand of the lyricist.

As a translator for Musicals

In parallel, she has been a chief translator, and lyricist for various series of musicals.

The first musical she participated was an original musical "Show girl" starred by "Nana Kinomi" and "Toshiyuki Hosokawa" staged from 1974.

Awarded

After this, She has participated in various musicals from overseas, like "The Apartment" or "The Witches of Eastwick", and done great works.

Gorgeous & Relaxing

This is a refined and a little bit gorgeous pop song in a faster foxtrot rhythm.

Bright

In the beginning, the drums, bass, keyboard, and brass section begin a sparkling introduction. And the main melody starts.

At the main part, the guitar, acoustic piano, and percussion joins, and support Yukari Itoh's charming vocal.

Nice bright saxophone solo is played in the bridge of the song.

MISTY HOUR

Since the late '60s, "Yukari Itoh" had been singing the main stream pops mostly, then a refined urban-pop album like this is very rare.

And thanks to the producer "Tetsuji Hayashi", many skilled musicians participated in, and supported a beautiful quality of this album.

Because, her father was a Jazz bassist, and as a standard life style for the musicians like him, he was touring around military camps of the Allied force.

"Yukari Itoh" was also taken to the camps, and naturally requested to sing.

That was why she started her career such early, but she was not a special case at that time.

Since debut, Itoh's had been singing the cover version of foreign pop songs, in other words, light, cheery melody major-scale.

So, it was a bit of challenge for her to sing a song like this, which was minor, melancholic and emotional vocal song.

But precisely because of such features, this song strongly appealed for the fans of the traditional Japanese pop music.
