About the creators

About the creators

The song title "Kohaku no mahou" (The magic of amber) means a cup of coffee in Japan. It is an aesthetic expression rarely used recently.

The artist name "EPO" pronounces simply [épo], not [iːpiːoː]. It's a nickname for her when she was a child, according to the wiki.

This song is originally written for a mini music program for children, aired on the NHK Educational in 1993.

(NHK is a Japan's public broadcaster like the BBC in Britain.)

The song was later included in her 18th album "UVA" released in 1995 from EMI MUSIC JAPAN INC. And covered again in a recent her best album, "EPO Golden Best" of 2011.

The song is written by EPO herself. But this beautiful Latin song arrangement is supported by Shigeharu Sasago, known as a guitarist, and composer of Latin music.

Acoustic & Tranquil

This is a calm & peaceful acoustic Latin music in middle speed.

A beautiful ensemble of the acoustic guitar, double bass, and percussions brings a warm and sleepy tropical afternoon atmosphere.

In Japan, "the magic of amber" is a poetic way of saying "coffee".

That expression might be comeing from a catch phrase of an old TV commercial, or possibly from a lyrics of an old song like "Coffee Rumba", quite a few of old generation can still understand the meaning of the phrase.

Just for your information, this is "Coffee Rumba".

And for the Japanese people, coffee has a strong image of Brazil because of heavy advertising, and a history of immigration.

That maybe why the coffee music usually arranged in tropical taste.

In the song, you might pick up an impressive good luck charm like lyrics "Shan-kare-ukioo.  "Shan-kare-ukioo".

No one knew the meaning of this, but the song was famous among children as a song of "Shan-kare-ukioo" at that time.

  1. About the artist

A bouquet of the '80s J-pop

EPO debuted in 1980 with single "DOWN TOWN". Since then, 42 singles, and 25 original, 12 best albums has been released until now.
(Wikipedia, EPO)

EPO is with no doubt, one of the leading singer & song writer particularly in the '80s J-pop.

The music she created was shockingly fresh and colorful, and the sound had a full of pop feeling.

It was just like a flower bouquet in full bloom, brilliant and fragrant.

In the '90s, her music has gradually moved to natural acoustic direction.

And "Kohaku no mahou", the song for today is one of the flower in this new stage.

We would like to post her nice songs in other opportunities. Please wait for a while until next time.

Video clip

Finally, we would like to introduce a video clip of "Kohaku no mahou" (The magic of amber) performed by EPO.

This is a much relaxing, simple & acoustic pop song. If you like, please listen to.

The song was originally written for a popular music program "Minna no Uta" (Song for everyone), and aired by a national broadcaster NHK as a monthly song "Kohaku no mahou".

So, we initially introduced an on-aired version of music video of this song posted on Youtube under the name of NHK, but later it found out to be an unauthorised upload by someone.

Then, we have replaced the link with new one linked to a properly licensed music video. (It's a song only version though.)

Please enjoy her lovely music.
