  1. Sound impressions

This is a slow sentimental ballad in a calm mellow tone.

An ensemble of the bass, drums and the acoustic guitar creates a relaxed rhythm, and the electric guitar effected with chorus&echo plays an emotional phrase in the key parts of the song.

In the back ground, there is a controlled play of the strings. And adding some nostargic atmosphere to the music.

Kaoru Sudo has a calm charming alto voice, which we feel it gives listeners a pleasant feeling of reassurance.

  1. About the artist

- Front runner in the "New-music"-

Kaoru Sudo debuted in 1979 with single "Yasashii Tokai". Since then, 16 singles, and 11 original, 7 omnibus, and 5 best albums has been released until now.
(Wikipedia, Kaoru Sudo)

She had been a top runner in the so-called "New-Music" music category which became active in the mid '70s.

The word "New-music" is actually quite vague, broad, and not very clear what type of music it means.

But as long as we have understood, it basically means refined & urbanized western style pop music, and sound much fashionable compared with the traditionally popular Japanese pop music, or folk song.

Here are samples of typical orthodox folk song, and the "New music". The artist of the former song is a super star "Shigeru Izumiya", and the latter is a pioneering singer-songwriter, "Yumi Arai".

If you like, please compare.

How have you heard about them?

Anyway, such "New-music" were well accepted by young music fans, and gradually became a new standard of Japanese pop music.

For more information, Please have a look at the wikipedia article "New-music".

There were hundreds of musicians in "New music" category in the mid '80s, but Kaoru Sudo was the one who were particularly shining.

At the CD shops in the '80s, her CD's were occupying nearly 50cm width of shelf often. (It might be equivalent with 60 CDs, we imagine.)

We would like to write a little more about her but have spent too much lines already.

Please allow us to continue the article on the next post of her sometime in the future. Thank you.
